| A Review of the Various Types of Cancer Treatments |
|
|
Do you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer? If you do, then
you will be interested to know more about cancer treatments, efficacy,
and side effects. There are numerous types of cancer treatments that
patients and their families can choose from.
They may choose from
invasive or non-invasive procedures, natural or alternative treatments,
radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. However,
not every treatment will work for every patient because the
effectivitness of a treatment depends on the type and the stage of a
particular cancer.
There are people who decide not to try or continue with a particular type of treatment for cancer. They may realize that it is not necessary to go through the pain and suffering of trying cancer treatments.
Some aggressive cancers advance so quickly that any type of treatment is powerless to stop the cancer cells from spreading. There are also cases where the cancer has progresses so far that many types of treatments are not among the options.
Chemotherapy is the most commonly used treatment for cancer. Over a hundred different drugs are used alone or in combination with others, that work systemically throughout the body. Since cancer cells often migrate to other parts of the body, chemotherapy is often a suitable treatment.
This treatment can be administered intravenously, orally, or intramuscularly and can be taken daily, weekly, or monthly. However, patients who undergo chemotherapy can often suffer from side effects. Fortunately, new cancer drugs are being developed to reduce side effects and make chemotherapy more bearable.
There are also alternative cancer treatments that are effective when combined with traditional approaches. These alternative therapies include herbal supplements like various herbal remedies, but the patient must not use these cancer treatments in any other way than prescribed, and should examine any herbal or alternative treatment carefully to make sure that it is genuine. Patients should also inform their oncologist of everything that they are taking including herbal preparations, prescription, and over the counter medications. There is a possibility that these chemicals may react violently with certain cancer treatments. Ask a second opinion before making any risky decisions about any type of treatment for cancer. Always keep in mind that cancer treatments that have helped others may be harmful to your condition. |
